The Sin of Sarah Palin

looking to the Right"Wow," I thought when I heard it was Sarah Palin for VP!  But then, I didn't really know much about her.  Wow!  What a mistake!  How could we have picked anyone who is less of a true conservative?  I was hoping the Republican Party could swerve away from its march toward theocracy with a candidate who represents normal people and true conservative principles.  One look at Sarah's position on issues and we see that she is way out there on the religious right pointed away from the Constitution, personal freedoms and the spirit that made America great.  It looks to me like the Republicans just can't wait to give more power to the Democrats.  Obama is an awful candidate, but picking a Republican VP that will drive away moderates and true conservatives is downright stupid.  Why do the Republican leaders feel they can do no better than a religious cheerleader who believes it is the government's role to tell people how to run their private lives?  Haven't we had enough of that from the Democrats.?

Is She Bright?

Sarah Palin may be bright and somewhat educated, but she has some simply idiotic ideas.  She wants teachers to teach creationism and so called intelligent design in schools!  Yes, in public schools!  O. K., some people practice the selective denial of science regardless of the stupidity of it.  That's fine.  But someone who could become the President of The United States of America is supposed to be a little smarter than that!  Believe if you want, but don't ask our children to bury their heads in the sand or force teachers to teach made up science.  It is not a conservative value to deny science or to force others to deny science.

She May Have 2 Truly Conservative Positions

Sample ImageShe supports gun ownership and the 2nd Amendment.  That she does, and she does it well.  Sarah Palin apparently has no reservations about our right to guns or the strength of the arguments around the Second Amendment.  Gun ownership is the one area where she has taken a position in favor of individual rights and freedom.

The only other area where she may carry the banner for true conservatives is around government spending.  She talks a story of reducing government waste and spending in sharp contrast to the Bush Administration which has been biggest liberal spenders of all time.  Let's face it, there isn't going to be small government when government is allowed to spend like there is no tomorrow (as with W and Cheney).  John McCain has already bought into the Bush legacy of spend big even if we don't have it (somebody else can raise taxes to pay for it in the future).  Can or will Sarah Palin stand up to the rest of the big spending Republicans?  It all depends on how many promises she had to make and do remember, she is a woman who believes there is no tomorrow.

The down side is, she was a big spender in her short tenure as mayor and most of the big spending was on high-priced consultants.

Where She Is NOT a Conservative

Sarah Palin fails the test of conservative thinking in almost every area that involves the basic spirit of the Constitution with regard to living free of government interference.  As Mayor of her hometown, Palin asked a long time librarian if she would be willing to ban some books.  Shortly after the librarian refused, Palin fired librarian claiming she was not "loyal" to the new administration and had supported Palin's opponent in the election. She said the dismissal was not connected to questions of censorship.  After a public outcry in her hometown, Palin rescinded the dismissal of the librarian.

That goes beyond fanatical religious frenzy all the way to unamerican.  American soldiers have died all over the world to keep such freedoms and Sarah Palin wants to just through them out the window and force her beliefs on all the other Americans.  Of course there is the America issue.  Palin's husband belonged to a secessionist movement that wanted to abandon the United States.  Sarah apparently spoke before them several times and has been completely O.K. with the position of this anti-American group since she has been unwilling to denounce them.

Although Republicans assert that Palin has made at least one tax cut in her career, she is an advocate of increasing taxes.  She successfully assessed a windfalls profits tax while Alaska's governor.  Republicans have scoffed at the idea of windfalls taxes, yet are happy with a VP candidate who has a track record in support of raising taxes.  Who is scamming whom here?

Except for gun rights, Palin believes that personal life decisions are better made by your government than by you.  She turns her back on the Constitution.  She believes that teachers in publicly funded schools should be required to lead students in prayer.  She believes the government should engineer social standards for families.  She is definitely not a conservative.  She is only a Republican.  She has repeatedly supported or proposed positions (contrary to the U.S. Constitution) that emphasize religious interpretations of the actual word and spirit of the Constitution.  It is difficult to see how we can remain a nation of free people if our only choices are between the Democrat Party with it's push for a socialist-like way of life and a new Republican Party with it's push for a more Iranian-like theocracy.

Maybe what we really need is a Conservative Party...
