Debt Death and Taxes (not Texas)

looking to the RightThe gold standard of conservative ideology is fiscal responsibility.  That means small government and small government spending.  The conservative litmus test, "Government should not spend more money than it has." distinguishes real conservatives from Democrats and Republicans like Marlboro's used to distinguish men from boys.  Both distinctions have suffered an image crises that just can't seem to be turned around.

How can you not have an image crisis when you are $8,900,000,000,000 (that's 8.9 trillion dollars) in debt?  What do you tell your public when your debt is so bad that each family owes more than 8 years worth of taxes on that debt (and that's without any interest)?  There is one thing you can take to the bank.  No credible conservative would try to tell you that the debt situation is anything but a disaster of epic proportion.  A real conservative would not have let it happen under any circumstances and a real conservative wouldn't lie to you about it now.

Who Shot The Golden Goose?

What? George W. Bush, that's who!  George has dealt the greatest blow to conservative ideals in decades.  He didn't do it alone.  He's not ashamed.  Maybe he doesn't care or maybe he doesn't understand, but what he has done is inexcusable.  I said he didn't do it alone, because he had the backing of a Republican Party that diverted its eyes, ears and mind from what was happening.  When it comes to fiscal responsibility, the Party has turned its back on conservative ideals, all true conservatives and America itself.

Government overspending is irresponsible.  Our Republican administration has spent money at a rate that would make any 20 third world dictators envious, but we didn't have the money to spend.  They pretended to be conservatives, yet they spent money like big-government liberals or worse -- no big-government liberal has ever come close to the squandering of the Bush Administration.  How very embarrassing it is to be a Republican.

An Idiot's Formula For Prosperity

What? I want lower taxes.  Every conservative wants tax rates to be low.  Cutting taxes is a fundamental ideal of the conservative ideology.  Limiting government spending and reducing taxes fit hand in hand.  Conservatives are certainly smart enough to know that when you spend too much, you are (in effect) raising future taxes.  If you have any integrity, you DO have to pay it back.

So what could have Republicans have been thinking when they backed Bush's tax cut?  George W. Bush himself and all his cronies knew George was on a spending binge. Like an alcoholic in liqueur store, George saw the fat line of credit and knew HE could spend it all.  George's tax cut was a fraud because he intended to spend like there was no tomorrow.  How were we so stupid as to let him get away with it?  I don't know, do you?

We have amended bankruptcy laws because families all over the country were acting irresponsibly by spending more than they made, ultimately accumulating so much debt they couldn't afford to pay it back.  We told them it was wrong and that they had to take responsibility for their actions.  They betrayed themselves and their creditors.  We stand betrayed by our own Republican Party and George W. Bush in particular.  They have spent irresponsibly, leaving it for someone in the future to clean up.  They will be gone, but we all will suffer their betrayal for decades to come.

These people are NOT conservatives!
